Recovery from the COVID crisis
Empirical evidence and experiences from Hungary and Slovakia

When the pandemic was announced, it was immediately clear to economists, economic analysts and policymakers that the pandemic and the measures taken to curb it would cause a global economic crisis. The world was not prepared for crises coming from outside the economy, a similar pandemic occurred almost 100 years ago during the Spanish Fever, but the world economy did not yet exist in its present form. Leaders of countries and organizations faced the double dilemma of what measures could be taken to curb the epidemic while at the same time minimizing any negative effect on the economy. The authors’ study draws on the results of an empirical study conducted in a bi-national collaboration to measure the responses of middle and senior executives in Slovakia and Hungary to discover how they are recovering from the COVID crisis, how they experienced the past period, and what their prospects are.
