Instruction for authors

The monthly Vezetéstudomány / Budapest Management Review (ISSN 0133-0179; Online ISSN 3057-9376) is the most significant journal in the field of business, management, and organizational studies in Hungary. It publishes papers that present empirical findings and contribute to the development of theories in the field.

We welcome research on different aspects of organizations. Besides structure, processes, and performance, we are equally interested in cultural, behavioural, and technological topics. Our emphasis is on multidisciplinary research, and we appreciate papers that draw on perspectives from sociology, psychology, economics, political science, or communication studies – apart from management and organization science.

We accept research at different levels of analysis: including individuals, groups, organizations, and networks in which organizations are embedded. Budapest Management Review publishes both empirical and theoretical papers but demands methodological rigor. If a manuscript applies novel methodology, the author should make sure that the steps of the data collection and analysis are transparent.

Published by Corvinus University of Budapest, Budapest Management Review is a peer-reviewed scientific journal, ranked category ‘A’ by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (rating valid from the 1st of June, 2023). Two English and ten Hungarian issues are published annually. Papers published in our journal receive a DOI number.

Please read the following requirements before submitting your manuscript.

Authorship criteria

In line with the ICMJE authorship definition, for someone to be considered an author, they must have:

  • Made substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND
  • Drafted the work or revised it critically for important intellectual content; AND
  • Given final approval of the version to be published; AND
  • Agreed to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Acknowledgements may be used to denote contributions to the work that do not meet the authorship criteria such as, supporting the study, general mentoring, collecting data, acting as study coordinator, and other related activities.

The corresponding author is responsible for coordinating the manuscript submission, ensuring that all authors agree on the author list and its order and addressing any authorship disputes before submission. In case of any requested changes of authorship before publication the editors adhere to the process of the relevant COPE flowchart: for addition of an extra author or to removal of an author. Authors cannot request changes in authorship after publication, although simple corrections of name spellings, affiliations, or credentials may be corrected at the discretion of the editor.

The use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies

This policy has been prompted by the fact, that the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT or Large Language Models in research publications is growing rapidly. Vezetéstudomány / Budapest Management Review will monitor developments and adapt or refine this policy as appropriate.

Vezetéstudomány / Budapest Management Review joins organisations, such as COPE, to state that AI tools cannot be listed as an author of a paper. AI tools cannot meet the requirements for authorship as they cannot take responsibility for the submitted work. As non-legal entities, they cannot assert the presence or absence of conflicts of interest nor manage copyright and license agreements. Authors are accountable for the originality, validity, and integrity of the content of their submissions.

Authors who use AI tools in the writing of a manuscript, production of images or graphical elements of the paper, or in the collection and analysis of data, must do so responsibly and in accordance with all our editorial policies, and they must be transparent in disclosing this fact. If authors used generative AI or AI-assisted technology, they should include the following statement directly before the references at the end of the manuscript:

During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.

Note: Technologies or human services that improve spelling and grammar do not need to be reported.

In case authors used AI tools as part of their research methodology, they should also provide the relevant details in the Materials and Methods (or similar section) of the paper, describing how the AI tool was used and which tool was used.

Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript, even those parts produced by an AI tool, and are thus liable for any breach of copyright or publication ethics.

Author responsibilities

Our goal is to provide you with a professional and courteous experience at each stage of the review and publication process. There are also some responsibilities that sit with you as the author. Our expectation is that you will:

  • Be accountable for all aspects of your work. This includes investigating and resolving any questions about accuracy or research integrity.
  • Treat communications between you and the journal editor as confidential until an editorial decision has been made.
  • Read about our research ethics for authorship. These state that you must:
    • Include anyone who has made a substantial and meaningful contribution to the submission (anyone else involved in the paper should be listed in the acknowledgements).
    • Exclude anyone who hasn’t contributed to the paper, or who has chosen not to be associated with the research.
  • If your article involves human participants, you must ensure you have considered whether or not you require ethical approval for your research and include this information as part of your submission.

  2. brief mention of major theories to which the study intends to contribute;
  3. approach / research design / methodology;
  4. key findings, conclusion, implications;
  5. limitations (optional).

In-text citations
The journal is a scientific journal and, therefore, does not publish articles without in-text citations and without a list of the cited sources.

In-text citations should be indicated by the author’s last name and year of publication,

Examples:

  • One author: (Borgatti, 2014) or Borgatti (2014). If a cited author has multiple publications from the same year, these should be differentiated (e.g., Porter 2018a, 2018b).
  • Two authors: (Borgatti & Halgin, 2011). Textual quotations should be indicated by quotation marks and page numbers in in-text citations, e.g (Borgatti & Halgin, 2011, p. 1179) or (Borgatti & Halgin, 2011, pp. 1179-1180).
  • For works with three or more authors list only the first author’s name followed by “et al.” in every citation, even the first, unless doing so would create ambiguity between different sources.

Reference
In-text citations and references should be edited following the guidelines of the American Psychological Association's citation style seventh edition (APA7).

  • Example (book): Jackson, L. M. (2019). The psychology of prejudice: From attitudes to social action (2nd ed.). American Psychological Association. https://doi.org/10.1037/0000168-000
  • Example (journal article): Borgatti, S. P., & Halgin, D. S. (2011). On Network Theory. Organization Science, 22(5), 1168–1181. https://doi.org/10.1287/orsc.1100.0641
  • For accurately edited citations and references, we recommend using reference managers like Mendeley, Zotero, or Endnote.

Uploading the studies
Manuscripts should be submitted through our Open Journal Systems submission page, which is available to authors after one-time registration.

You can register by filling in the form here

All submission files should be uploaded in such a way that it does not reveal an author’s identity. (Anonymisation guides: deleting author metadata from files, deleting author data from comments and track-changes.)

Revised manuscripts should be submitted under the same ID number (to the open submission procedure) during the review process.

Please note our journal only accepts papers that are based on original research and that have not yet been published or are under review elsewhere.

Thematic or special issue
If you submit your manuscript to one of our special issues, please select the corresponding special issue section (KSZ) and/or indicate this during the submission process in the field ‘Comments for the Editor’.

ORCID
Our journal supports the use of ORCID, so we ask our authors to register and provide their ORCID number when uploading manuscripts, or at the very least during the copyediting process (for co-authors as well).

Review process

Our journal conducts double-blind reviews, meaning that both the authors and the reviewers are ‘blind’ to the identity of the other.

Authors must remove explicit indications of the authors’ names and institutions, as well as all acknowledgments (Author names, institutions, and acknowledgments will be returned to the printed manuscript upon acceptance for publication.)

The paper should be written in such a way that it does not reveal an author’s identity.

! Please make sure that author names are not indicated in the manuscript file properties or metadata.

In the case of manuscripts in English, the editors may request English language editing or proof-reading, if the need arises during the review process.

For further information on the review process see our detailed Peer review policies.

Letter of acceptance
A letter of acceptance may be issued upon the completion of the review process, once the section editor responsible for the paper declares it finished and the final acceptance decision is made.

Copyediting

To reduce the time for getting through the press, we kindly ask our authors to review and approve proof-sheets till the given deadlines (usually in 1-2 days).

Please note that the copyediting phase is the last opportunity to initiate any changes, including the author's order, so you can submit your change request up until that point.

Publication
Papers published in our journal are open access and available through Corvinus Research repository as well.

We kindly ask our authors to only share links to their papers and not full-text PDF files on personal sites and research networks, as we continuously monitor download and reading statistics, and we consider these factors when selecting articles for our best paper prize.
