Abstract

The complexity of the higher education context, the continuous increase in the number of students, the global competition for research funds, the disappearing tenure track, and the appearance of project-based employment creates multiple challenges for early career academics. The article identifies the relationships between the main expectations as experienced by early career academics, as well as the individual and organizational factors that shape their nature and strength. One of the main contributions of the article is the identification of the individual competencies which are necessary to address the above formulated expectations but are not enough to transform their relationship. The article reveals those organizational systems that are necessary to support the individual actions aimed at transforming and reinforcing the expectations and to create the possibility of sustainable wellbeing for early academics.
