Abstract

Social enterprises have simultaneous social and business goals. These enterprises attempt to reach a balance between the achievement of both kinds of goals, although they usually head in different directions. The aim of the current study is to explore the tensions that social enterprises face as a result of this dual (social and business) commitment. As the study is of an exploratory nature, the authors use an inductive, qualitative approach based on semi-structured in-depth interviews. Their results show the dual nature of social enterprise goals and their related challenges and tensions. They also structure the tensions revealed by their empirical research, and categorise them into four main groups and 15 subgroups.
