Examining dark triad traits in an entrepreneurial context is not new in the literature: studies have found these traits beneficial for entrepreneurial success. In addition to exploring this relationship, this research aims to understand the underlying mechanisms. Analyzing the Hungarian database of GUESSS (Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey), the authors found that subclinical narcissism positively affects entrepreneurial success. Entrepreneurs with higher narcissism scores are more likely to have a Darwinian entrepreneurial identity, i.e., they are primarily driven by successful entrepreneurship and profit-making, which in turn contributes to increased entrepreneurial performance. Additionally, the desire for social status and recognition enhances mission-driven values, leading to better performance among those with higher narcissism scores. Both Darwinian and missionary social identities partially mediate the positive impact of subclinical narcissism on entrepreneurial performance. No significant direct effect was found for subclinical psychopathy and Machiavellianism. However, psychopathy negatively affects entrepreneurial performance through its influence on entrepreneurial social identity.
