Abstract

In this study, the authors examine the manifestations of Industry 4.0 and digitization in the food industry. They point out that Industry 4.0 is already present in this sector and can play a key role in tracking and tracing, and food safety. During the research, the authors interviewed four companies in the meat, dairy and pasta industries about their digital developments and their Industry 4.0 experience. They developed an analytical framework based on several Industry 4.0 maturity models found in the literature, examining changes not only in production but also in strategy and organization, employees, and corporate culture. The authors’ goal was to showcase best practices to corporate professionals and a systematic study from which they can draw ideas for their improvements. The results show that, although the investments made at the analysed companies are not consciously in Industry 4.0, they tried to take advantage of the opportunities offered by digitalization. Companies are making improvements under the pressure of labour shortages, to achieve higher efficiency and thus remain competitive, and to serve the company’s growth strategy.
