Abstract

Lean management seems to have become one of the synonyms for company competitiveness. Therefore, it is not surprising that the application of lean principles has shifted from direct production processes to other business activities. Unfortunately, lean transformations often fail, which makes it an even greater challenge to try to apply it for these different processes. This, however, does not mean that supporting activities or service processes could not be made ‘leaner’. In this study, the authors examined the feasibility and necessity of applying lean principles in an office environment. Through four types of losses, they demonstrate that the incomplete application of lean management is not due to its inadequacy or the difficulty of adapting lean tools for these processes, but rather to the lack of implementing lean as an approach. Their research shows that the loss-seeking approach, the appropriate data collection and the often creative use of lean tools are effective and efficient tools for increasing customer value, even in an office environment – often beyond expectations.
