Abstract

Environmental awareness and the environmental impact of individual actions are increasingly pressing issues today. The environmental sustainability of tourism is inherently controversial, and sustainable tourism is best seen as a normative orientation. This review article provides an overview of research focusing on pro-environmental tourist behaviour and describes the most important individual and collective/ societal/ contextual factors influencing it. By systematising the results, the article identifies current research directions: there is scope for further exploration of actors’ interpretations of pro-environmental tourist behaviour and the influence of social norms and cultural context.
