This paper applies the systematic literature review (SLR), based on the Scopus and Web of Science databases, to describe the quantitative and qualitative methodologies used to quantify tourism seasonality in the Mediterranean region. Using the results of the SLR, it presents the fluctuations of the tourist flows in the Lake Balaton region. Based on the systematic literature review, qualitative methodologies are rare in the field of tourism seasonality, as the majority of research being quantitative. The most commonly used measures are the Gini index, the RME, the Theil index and the coefficient of variance. None of these indicators is superior to the others, and their combined use is recommended where data allow. The municipalities of the Lake Balaton area are not homogeneous in terms of their seasonality. It has fluctuated since 2008, with no clear trend. The problems arising from the phenomenon studied are, therefore, still important policy issues in the destination today.
