Korunk hektikus, egyre kiszámíthatatlanabb változásai a nemzeteket és cégeket egyaránt eddigi fejlődési pályájuk átgondolására kényszerítik. Erre ráerősít az erőforrások csökkenése, felhasználásuk hatékonysága növelésének szükségessége. A mennyiségi növekedési célokat is felülírja a rendszerszemléletű fejlődésre való áttérés igénye, és egyben az ezáltal kínált újabb lehetőségek megjelenése.
A már korábban is ismert és többféleképpen elnevezett szellemi tartalom, szervezeti és vezetési képességek fontossága kerül előtérbe a versenyképesség javításában, a változásokhoz való sikeres alkalmazkodásban és általában a jövőre való felkészültség biztosításában.
A cikk felvázolja a szellemi javak versenyképességben játszott szerepével kapcsolatos legfőbb szakmai érveket, majd az adatok tükrében bizonyítja, hogy a szellemi javakba történő beruházások nemzeti és céges szinten egyaránt hoz-zájárulnak a társadalmi-gazdasági eredményesség, a versenyképesség javításához. A cikk tisztázza a szellemi tartalommal kapcsolatos fogalmakat, és a mérési problémákra is kitér.
