Abstract

The increase in the proportion of older people in the total population creates challenges for several industries. Tourism is no exception to this. Promoting participation by seniors in tourism should be considered in wider perspective than that of a market opportunity: an active lifestyle is related to social wellbeing and satisfaction with life. In our research we investigate motivation and tourism experience among the elderly. We focus on understanding the motivating factors, the difficulties and risks perceived by senior tourists during their travels. Our in-depth interviews confirm the belief that the elderly make up a heterogeneous social group, and their travels are affected, not only by financial, but also by various emotional and intellectual factors such as socialization, intellectual curiosity and nostalgia.
