From Escapism To Recommendation – Experience Stages and Their Impact on Guests in Ruinpubs

‘Ruin pubs’ and ‘Art pubs’ are both unique to and prominent in Hungarian cultural life and the tourism supply. Our study has an unusual perspective on these unique tourist attractions. Using a holistic experience approach, we focus on the individual. An important component of the tourism experience is individual engagement and involvement, as these can trigger memorable experiences, so stimulating further consumption of the service. At individual level ‘escapism’ refers to a type of activity and involvement during an experience. This experience could lead to a deeper relationship, which might bring about individual transformation. Service providers may question the extent to which an experience influences consumer satisfaction and further recommendation of the service. The aim of the study is, therefore, to examine the stages of such experience – escapism, transformation and memorable experience – at individual level. A further aim is to analyze the relationships among experience effects, satisfaction and recommendation. Our results have implications for thematic tourism attractions and catering management.
