Abstract

The aim of this study is to show those features actually in demand for cycling tourism in the Lake Balaton Tourism Region in Hungary. The investigations relies on a new approach to the issues of attraction and product development relating to a destination. It is, of course, most important to take consumer preferences into account together with the motives of the particular groups of cyclists or active cycling tourists. Online surveys were carried out in November/December 2019 and produced a valid sample of cyclists and active consumers of 1 087 completed questionnaires. Furter, six focus group interviews and 23 structured interviews were organized among cycling professionals, service providers and stakeholders. The results should contribute to the development of cycling routes: the recent Balaton Cycling Tour b y the l ake shore and t he planned 600 km-long c ycling-pathway network in the hinterland. This sustainable approach of tourism product development also provides an opportunity to reduce the spatial and seasonal concentration of Balaton tourism – an overwhelmingly summertime activity.
