Abstract

The aim of the present study is to explore the dimensions of the perception of safety and security of foreign tourists visiting Hungary, to identify the main factors influencing their destination choice and their attitudes towards safety and security, with special emphasis on the risks they face during their travels. Given that tourism is a priority in Hungarian economic and social life, the publication of the results of this study could help to develop the sector at local, regional and national level. The
questionnaire survey of 1000 people was conducted in the second half of 2019, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and so the results are not suitable for assessing the impact of the pandemic on tourism safety. However, it provides useful support for both the tourism industry and law enforcement professionals to explore more deeply the „most sensitive” areas and risk factors.
