Abstract

Art fairs serve as dynamic drivers of art market operation: galleries enhance their marketing power through participation in these events, the artists they represent obtain publicity among wider interested circles, and collectors can view artworks in person before incorporating them into their collections. Following the globalization of art fairs in the 20th century, approximately 380 such events are held annually worldwide. However, art fairs not only cater to art enthusiasts’ interests – they also exert a positive influence on local economies by stimulating tourism flows, providing educational activities, generating new employment opportunities, and shaping the branding strategies of host cities. In this paper, the impact of art fairs on cultural tourism is examined through scholarly sources, while their position within the Hungarian context is explored via in-depth interviews conducted with domestic market experts.
