A tanulmány a hasznosság koncepciójának elmélettörténeti alakulá-sát vizsgálja a 18. századi korai közgazdasági nézetektől a viselkedési közgazdaságta-nig. Kritikai értékelő, elemző módon rámutat arra, hogy hogyan alakult át a hasznos-ság értelmezése és szerepe a közgazdaságtan fejlődésével – az utilitarizmus normatív alapjaitól a marginális hasznosság elméletén és a racionális választás modelljén ke-resztül a várható hasznosság maximalizálásának formalizált keretévé. A tanulmány külön figyelmet szentel annak, hogy miként kérdőjelezte meg a viselkedési közgazda-ságtan a neoklasszikus közgazdaságtan racionalitásra és várható hasznosságra vonat-kozó feltételezéseit. Végül arra is kitér, hogy a valós körülmények között megvalósuló döntések és viselkedésformák empirikus kutatási eredményei hogyan járultak hozzá a hasznosság koncepciójának és a hasznossági függvényeknek a gazdagításához.
