A kínai "egy pár - egy gyermek" politika egyedülálló kísérlet egy ország jólétének, hatalmának és globális pozíciójának mérnöki befolyásolására a népességnövekedés drasztikus megfékezésével. 1979-80-as bevezetése óta háromszázmillió születést akadályoztak meg a hivatalos közlés szerint, ami alapvető hatást gyakorolt a kínai valóság szinte minden területére. E politika élénk érdeklődést váltott ki a Kínán kívüli világ részéről, amelyet meglepett a termékenység reprodukciós szint alá esése, s amely aggódik a folyamat emberi áldozatai miatt.
