A cikk a biodiverzitás értékét elemzi különböző szinteken: tárgyalja a piaci, nempiaci, valamint az ökológiai rendszerek szempontjából vett értéket. Legfőbb következtetése értelmében a természet szolgáltatásainak piaci csereértékét fölhasználhatjuk ugyan a biodiverzitás megőrzését szolgáló intézkedések igazolására, ám mindenképp hangsúlyoznunk kell, hogy a csereérték csupán kis hányadát teszi ki a biodiverzitás teljes értékének, melyről túl sokat mindmáig nem tudunk, mégis biztosak lehetünk benne, hogy elengedhetetlenül fontos az emberi létezéshez. A tény, hogy a biodiverzitás különböző szinteken értékelhető, hierarchikus és pluralisztikus metodológia igényét veti föl annak érdekében, hogy megfelelő közpolitikákat határozhassunk meg e sokféleség megőrzéséhez.
