A mértékletesség erőteljes leértékelődése egyéni és társadalmi normaként a modern keresztény etika egyik legérdekesebb és jórészt nem elemzett problémája. A keresztény gazdaságetika szívéhez egykor oly közelálló, régi és megbecsült erény a modern erkölcs egyik leginkább figyelmen kívül hagyott - és erejétől megfosztott - normájává vált. A kevés, bár talán növekvő számú mértékletességre intő közérthető megszólalás a mértékletességet igen ritkán magyarázza és indokolja keresztény etikai szempontból. Ez a hanyatlás azonban jóval több, mint intellektuális érdekesség: önmagában is komoly erkölcsi probléma, amennyiben a norma követése társadalmi és ökológiai szempontból lényeges.
