Abstract

The health and well-being of entrepreneurs are not merely matters of personal concern; they are key factors shaping the operation and performance of businesses. A distinctive feature of entrepreneurship is that responsibility for decision-making, the need to manage uncertainty, and constant performance pressures can simultaneously generate a high degree of satisfaction and significant levels of stress. According to the international literature, entrepreneurs often report higher levels of subjective well-being than employees, yet they are also more exposed to chronic stress, mental exhaustion, and burnout. This study reviews the international literature on entrepreneurial well-being and burnout, with particular attention to the paradoxes of entrepreneurship, the main dimensions of burnout, and the roles of stress and recovery. It also presents innovative tools for measuring entrepreneurial well-being, including the methodology developed by the French AMAROK research institute. Furthermore, the findings of a Hungarian pilot study confirm the relationship between perceived stress and burnout, while highlighting the protective role of harmonious passion. Finally, the paper formulates policy and institutional recommendations aimed at preserving entrepreneurs’ health, preventing burnout, and thereby strengthening the long-term sustainability of businesses.
