After reviewing the measurement of adult literacy, this paper examines how its outcome – referred to as knowledge capital – differs from human capital. It also analyzes the relationship between knowledge capital, as measured by adult literacy, and economic growth, briefly highlighting the debates surrounding this issue. Furthermore, the paper explores the domestic characteristics of the relationship between knowledge capital and economic development. Finally, it sheds light on the state of adult literacy in Europe, the associated challenges, and adult education as a potential solution. The analysis highlights the lagging performance of adult literacy competencies in Hungary (i.e., Hungarian knowledge capital) in international comparison. This underlines the importance of adult education, which can enhance not only competitiveness and employability but also support democratic engagement.
